The Playing Field Is Flat Again

4 min read

In the agentic era it doesn’t matter when you were born, only whether you deploy agents. Three ways experienced founders win.

I’m 63 years old. And for the first time since social media showed up, I’m not playing catch-up.

Neither are you.

Here’s what I see. In the analog era, nobody could outwork me. In the digital era, the kids who grew up on social media had the edge. In the agentic era, the playing field is flat again.

It doesn’t matter when you were born. It only matters whether you deploy agents.

Let me show you why.

The Analog Era: Nobody Could Outwork Me

I learned entrepreneurship at eight years old, in my family’s business at the Jersey Shore. My grandfather had a line I’ve carried my whole life: “Sell air, sell ideas.”

That was the game. You showed up early. You stayed late. You knew every customer’s name. You made one more call than the next guy.

And I won that game. Nobody could outwork me.

That work ethic carried me through about 30 years of coaching founders and more than 6,000 businesses. Effort, relationships, judgment. If you brought those three, you could build anything.

The Digital Era: The Kids Had the Edge

Then the rules changed.

The game stopped being about who worked hardest. It became about who was fluent in the feed. Posting. Reels. Algorithms. Followers.

The kids who grew up on social media spoke that language like natives. The rest of us learned it as a second language, with an accent.

I watched founders with decades of wisdom start to feel invisible. Not because they had less to offer. Because they didn’t grow up with a phone in their hand.

If you’ve felt that, you’re not alone. And you’re not behind anymore.

The Agentic Era: The Field Is Flat Again

An agent isn’t another app to scroll. It’s work you hand off. You give it a job, it does the job, and you decide what’s good enough.

Think about what that takes. Knowing what matters. Knowing what good looks like. Knowing who to trust with what. Setting the standard and holding it.

That’s not a skill you pick up from growing up on social media. That’s what you’ve been doing your whole career.

You’ve hired people. You’ve trained them. You’ve handed someone a job, checked their work, and coached them until they got it right. That is the skill. The tool is new. The skill isn’t.

Agents don’t reward the person who grew up on the feed. They reward the person who knows how to delegate. Experience plus agents beats youth plus social savvy.

Your birthday doesn’t decide this one. Your decision does.

I didn’t get here in a straight line

I’ll tell you the truth about my own path.

First, I was resistant. Then I got curious. Then I hit what I call “AI euphoria.” I said yes to every tool. Every app, every subscription, every shiny new thing.

Then I hit my “AI bottom.” I had so many tools I couldn’t find anything.

So I reset. Today I implement agentic systems for founders. And the mess taught me exactly what to tell you.

3 Ways to Win in the Agentic Era

1. Deploy, don’t just subscribe.

Buying LLM seats for your whole team is like buying gym memberships nobody uses. It feels like progress. It isn’t.

Start with you. One agent, working for you, doing real work every day. At delegAIte, that’s why we start founders with a Chief of Staff agent. When you feel the difference in your own week, you’ll know what to give your team, and they’ll see you leading the way.

2. Go through the stages. Don’t skip them.

Here’s the path I take every founder through:

  • Remember and forget.
  • Fail and succeed.
  • Mastery.
  • Implement it, then give it away.

Don’t try to jump straight to mastery. Nobody gets there without the first two stages.

You will fail before you succeed. That’s not a problem. That’s the process. My euphoria and my bottom were part of the path, not a detour from it.

And the last stage matters most. When you’ve mastered it, give it away. Teach your team. Teach your peers. That’s how it sticks.

3. Build an ark.

I call it my Noah’s Ark rule. Every role has a backup. Two of everything.

And every build stays LLM-agnostic. You don’t marry one model or one company. Tools will come and go. Your system shouldn’t sink when one of them does.

That’s the difference between playing with AI and building a business on it.

Your Experience Is the Advantage Now

For years, a lot of us were told, one way or another, that this new world wasn’t built for us.

This one is.

The judgment you earned, the relationships you built, the standards you hold: that’s exactly what agents need from a leader. My grandfather sold air and ideas. You’ve been selling yours for decades. Now you get to put agents behind them.

Our tagline at delegAIte is simple: Do only what you love. That’s the point of all of this. Hand off the rest.

If this landed for you, let’s talk. I offer a free 60-minute agent build call for founders who are ready to deploy their first agent. No pressure, just a real conversation about your business and what’s possible.

Book your call here, or find us at delegaite.co.

The field is flat. Let’s go play.
